Seeing Pugna’ta assaulting Tabitha was like seeing my worst nightmare brought to life. Tabitha’s face was bleeding profusely, and her body lay beneath Pugna’ta’s in a misshapen form. Surlif was lying by Pugna’ta’s feet, unconscious, but I could tell he had tried to defend Tabitha. I had no time to feel grateful, however, as Pugna’ta had lifted Tabitha’s head off the ground to deliver what would likely be the final blow.

I had never moved faster in my life. My hand was around Pugna’ta’s throat before I realized I had even reached her. She choked for breath and tried to free herself from my grasp as I held her above my head. It was the first time I wanted to kill another A’li-uud, and, were I not an Elder, I probably would have.

I released her by simply letting go, and she dropped to the ground with flailing limbs. There was a crunch when she hit the floor; I didn’t know if she’d broken any bones, and I didn’t care. I moved swiftly to Tabitha’s side; she clawed desperately at my chest with pain. When I looked around again, Pugna’ta was clutching her neck and gasping for breath while staring at me with hatred on her sharp, well-defined features.

“You will leave here, and you will not come back,” I said in a low, dangerous voice. “Get out. Now.”

“You’re going to kill us all,” she panted. She didn’t make any moves to get to her feet. “Your love for that simpleton human is going to be the end of our race.”

My reaction was instinctual, not purposeful. I stood in one smooth movement, stalked over to her, wrapped my hand in her pale, wispy hair, and dragged her across the floor through the social room to the foyer. At that moment, several warriors burst through the front doors with weapons raised and alert expressions on their faces. I sneered at them in disgust. “There will be consequences for this.”

“She got past us, Your Highness—”

“Pugna’ta is a skilled warrior—”

I held up a hand and closed my eyes briefly. My other hand, still wrapped in Pugna’ta’s hair, shot forward as an indication for one of the guards to take her from me. As I reopened my eyes, the nearest stepped forward and took a fistful of her hair, and I let her go. “I want this abomination out of my house. If she ever comes within these walls again, you will kill her on sight.”

Pugna’ta snickered, and I knelt down in front of her. Taking her chin in my fingers, I tilted her face up to mine and murmured, “You don’t have to worry about my love for Tabitha ending our race. Your arrogance will kill you long before that ever happens.” Then, with a sweeping motion of my hand, I dismissed them all from my presence. They turned back through the double doors with Pugna’ta dragged behind them, and I returned at a sprint to the dining room, where Tabitha remained on the floor.

“Is it just your face? What else hurts?” I demanded, feeling her all over for tenderness or broken bones.
